I've been there too many times... I'm just about to cook and I'm missing a key ingredient or spice. I don't always have the freedom to run to the store so I've learned some substitutes over the years to help. Here are 20 of my favorite tried and true substitutions for recipe ingredients:
NON-BAKING SUBSTITUTES
Butter - Canola Oil, Vegetable Oil, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, or Ghee.
Chicken Broth - 1 Cup of water + 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce = 1 Cup Chicken Broth.
Dijon Mustard - 1 Tbsp Dry Mustard + 1 Tbsp Mayonnaise + 1 tsp White Vinegar + 1 tsp Water + Pinch of Sugar = 2 Tbsp Dijon Mustard.
Sour Cream - Plain yogurt or greek yogurt.
Tomato Sauce - Tomato Puree or Canned Whole Tomatoes blended.
Worcestershire Sauce - 2 tsp Soy Sauce + 1/4 tsp Lemon Juice + 1/4 tsp Sugar + dash of Hot Sauce = 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce.
Milk - Use Yogurt or Sour Cream mixed with water to thin.
Yogurt - Sour Cream BAKING SUBSTITUTES
Baking Soda - 3 tsp Baking Powder = 1 tsp Baking Soda
Baking Powder - 1/2 tsp Cream of Tartar + 1/4 tsp Baking Soda = 1 tsp Baking Powder
Buttermilk - 1 cup of Milk + 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice or White Vinegar = 1 Cup of Buttermilk
Butter - Greek Yogurt, Applesauce, or Oil.
Corn Starch - 1 Tbsp Arrowroot + 2 tsp Potato Starch = 1 Tbsp Corn Starch
Vanilla Extract - Maple Extract or Bourbon SPICE SUBSTITUTES
Cayenne Pepper - 2 Tbsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes = 1 Tbsp Cayenne Pepper
Chili Powder - 1 tsp Paprika + 1 tsp Cumin + 1/2 tsp Onion Powder + 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder + Pinch of Cayenne = 1 Tbsp Chili Powder
Nutmeg - Mace or Allspice
Thyme - Basil, Marjoram, Oregano, or Rosemary.
Parsley - Basil, Chervil, or Celery Leaf.
Oregano - Thyme or Basil.
